My Only Hope On This Election Day
Well...maybe I should begin by stating where my hope isn't on this Election Day. It isn't in either of the presidential candidates. I won't be thrilled by a win for either one of them, although I have a definite preference. (I won't go into that here, but I'll give you a hint: my vote this year is highly focused on my concerns for religious liberty).
My only hope on this Election Day is in the God who is sovereign over rulers and nations. He is not impotent, nor has he fallen asleep at the wheel. And he is working all things--even this dreadful election--toward his purposes, which are good.
I recall the wise words of Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, beseeching his colleagues in their dismay to look upon the Great Creator and his faithful providence:
"I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth--that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?"
Of course, I realize that Franklin spoke these words as he and his distinguished conclave of statesmen laid the groundwork for a new nation, while I invoke them as comfort to beleaguered citizens watching that nation flounder. But what is true for the Founding Fathers in 1787 is just as true for us today in 2016: in our deepest distress, there is nowhere else to turn but to the Almighty. His words and ways inspired the birth of our nation, and He, alone, can restore it at his pleasure.
So what is our part in this? I believe it is, first and foremost, to pray. And to recommit ourselves to a passion for Truth and to living out what we say we believe--to recommit ourselves to being a people of integrity.
Next, I believe it is our duty, as citizens, to use the tools at our disposal to repair the damage that has been done to our Constitution's limitations on government power. The most powerful tool for this is found in Article V, and by using it we can begin to restore the original vision for America.
I'll be praying today for our nation. I know the One who holds it in his hands.
